Hello and welcome to The Illustrated Library!
I wanted to create this website as a way of supporting other librarians and give back to a community who have helped further my passion of encouraging the next generation to become readers. I have a background in illustration and have experience in book-selling and publishing but there's something about working in the library that makes it my favourite job of all.

Being a librarian is a joyous job. From the moment you see a reluctant child find a book that hooks them, to the point that a child really 'sees' themselves in a book you have recommended, or when a whole class is truly engaged in a story you are reading and you stop on a cliffhanger...

However, there are times in the job where things can feel quite lonely and there are so many decisions to make in a job where often you're the only librarian on the team. I have often found myself spending my own time looking online for resources and making up my own because there isn't enough time in the school day and I really want to find new ways to capture a love of reading in the children I work with.

This is why I created this website. Whether you're a new librarian, a Reading Lead or Headteacher who wants to boost the profile of reading in your school or you're a TA in charge of the library for an hour on a Friday afternoon but want to do more, this website should give you lots of ideas to get you started. There are resources here to help you build up your library, activities to teach information literacy skills, ideas for events such as World Book Day, and so much more.
